Surah for Stress and Anxiety
1. Surah Al-Baqarah (2:155)
Arabic:
وَلَنَبْلُوَنَّكُم بِشَيْءٍ مِّنَ الْخَوفِ وَالْجُوعِ وَنَقْصٍ مِّنَ الْأَمْوَالِ وَالْأَنفُسِ وَالثَّمَرَاتِ ۗ وَبَشِّرِ الصَّابِرِينَ
Transliteration:
Wa lanabluwannakum bishay’in mina al-khawfi wal-juʿi wa naqṣin mina al-amwāli wal-anfusi wa aṯ-ṯamaraat. Wa bashshiriṣ-ṣābirīn.
Translation:
We will certainly test you with a touch of fear and famine and loss of property, life, and crops. Give good news to those who patiently endure.
2. Surah Al-Baqarah (2:261):
Arabic:
مَّثَلُ ٱلَّذِينَ يُنفِقُونَ أَمْوَٰلَهُمْ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ كَمَثَلِ حَبَّةٍ أَنۢبَتَتْ سَبْعَ سَنَابِلَ فِى كُلِّ سُنۢبُلَةٍۢ مِّا۟ئَةُ حَبَّةٍۢ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ يُضَـٰعِفُ لِمَن يَشَآءُ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ وَٰسِعٌ عَلِيمٌۭ
Transliteration:
Mathalu alladhīna yunfiqūna amwālahum fī sabīli l-lāhi kamaṯali ḥabbatin anbatat sabʿa sanābila fī kulli sunbulatin mi’atu ḥabbah. Wa l-lāhu yuḍāʿifu liman yashā’u. Wa l-lāhu wāsiʿun ʿalīmun.
Translation:
The example of those who spend their wealth in the cause of God is that of a grain that sprouts in seven ears, each bearing one hundred grains. And God multiplies ‘the reward even more’ to whoever He wills. For God is All-Bountiful, All-Knowing.
3. Surah Al-Qasas (28:54):
Arabic:
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ يُؤْتَوْنَ أَجْرَ ٱلدَّارِ بِمَا صَبَرُوا۟ وَيُلَقَّوْنَ فِيهَا تَحِيَّةًۭ وَسَلَـٰمًۭا ۖ خَـٰلِدِينَ فِيهَا ۖ حَسُنَت مُسْتَقَرًّۭا وَمُقَامًۭا
Transliteration:
Ūlā’ika yu’tawna ajra d-dāri bimā ṣabarū wa yulaqqawnā fīhā taḥiyyatan wa salāmā. Khālidīna fīhā. ḥasanat mustaqarran wa muqāmā.
Translation:
These ‘believers’ will be given a double reward for their perseverance, responding to evil with good, and for donating from what We have provided for them.
4. Surah Al-Imran (3:142):
Arabic:
أَمْ حَسِبْتُمْ أَن تَدْخُلُوا۟ ٱلْجَنَّةَ وَلَمَّا يَأْتِكُم مَّثَلُ ٱلَّذِينَ خَلَوْا۟ مِن قَبْلِكُم ۖ مَّسَّتْهُمُ ٱلْبَأْسَآءُ وَٱلضَّرَّآءُ وَزُلْزِلُوا۟ حَتَّىٰ يَقُولَ ٱلرَّسُولُ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مَعَهُۥ مَتَىٰ نَصْرُ ٱللَّهِ ۗ أَلَآ إِنَّ نَصْرَ ٱللَّهِ قَرِيبٌۭ
Transliteration:
Am ḥaṣibtum an tadkhulū al-jannata wa lammā yatikum mathalu allaḏīna khalaū min qablikum massathumu al-ba’sā’u wa aḍ-ḍarrā’u wa zulzilū ḥattā yaqūla ar-rasūlu wa allaḏīna āmanū maʿahu matā naṣru l-lāhi ʾalā ʾinna naṣra l-lāhi qarībun.
Translation:
Do you think you will enter Paradise without God proving which of you ‘truly’ struggled ‘for His cause’ and patiently endured?
5. Surah Al-Ankabut (29:69):
Arabic:
وَٱلَّذِينَ جَـٰهَدُوا۟ فِينَا لَنَهْدِيَنَّهُمْ سُبُلَنَا ۚ وَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَمَعَ ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ
Transliteration:
Wa allaḏīna jāhadū fīnā lanahdiyannahum subulanā. Wa innal-lāha la-maʿa l-muḥsinīn.
Translation:
As for those who struggle in Our cause, We will surely guide them along Our Way. And God is certainly with the good-doers.
6. Surah Al-Imran (3:144):
Arabic:
مُّحَمَّدٌۭ رَّسُولُ ٱللَّهِ ۚ وَٱلَّذِينَ مَعَهُۥٓ أَشِدَّآءُ عَلَى ٱلْكُفَّارِ رُحَمَآءُ بَيْنَهُمْ ۖ تَرَىٰهُمْ رُكَّعًۭا سُجَّدًۭا يَبْتَغُونَ فَضْلًۭا مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرِضْوَٰنًۭا ۖ سِيمَاهُمْ فِى وُجُوهِهِم مِّنْ أَثَرِ ٱلسُّجُودِ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ مَثَلُهُمْ فِى ٱلتَّوْرَىٰةِ ۚ وَمَثَلُهُمْ فِى ٱلْإِنجِيلِ كَزَرْعٍ أَخْرَجَ شَطْـَٔهُۥ فَـَٔازَرَهُۥ فَـَٔاصَلَهُۥ فَٱسْتَغْلَظَ فَٱسْتَوَىٰ عَلَىٰ سُوقِهِۦ يُعْجِبُ ٱلزُّرَّاعَ لِيَغِيظَ بِهِمُ ٱلْكُفَّارَ ۗ وَعَدَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ مِنْهُم مَّغْفِرَةًۭ وَأَجْرًۭا عَظِيمًۭا
Transliteration:
Muḥammadun rasūlu l-lāhi wa allaḏīna maʿahu ʾashiddāʾu ʿalā l-kuffāri raḥamā’u baynahum tarāhum rukkaʿan sujjadan yabtaghūna faḍlan mina l-lāhi wa riḍwānan. Sīmāhum fī wujūhihim min ʾathari s-sujūdi. ẓālika mathaluhum fī t-tawrāti wa mathaluhum fī l-ʾinjīli kazarʿin ʾakhraja shatʾahu faʾazarahū faʾaṣalahu fasṭaghlaẓa fasṭawā ʿalā sūqihi yuʿjibu z-zurrāʿa liyagīẓa bihimu l-kuffāra waʿada l-lāhu allaḏīna ʾāmanū wa ʿamilū ṣ-ṣāliḥāti minhum maghfiratan wa ajrā ʿaẓīman.
Translation:
Muhammad is no more than a messenger, other messengers have gone before him. If he were to die or to be killed, would you regress into disbelief? Those who do so will not harm God whatsoever. And God will reward those who are grateful.
7. Surah Al-Hajj (22:58):
Arabic:
وَٱلَّذِينَ هَاجَرُوا۟ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ ثُمَّ قُتِلُوٓا۟ أَوْ مَاتُوا۟ لَيَرْزُقَنَّهُمُ ٱللَّهُ رِزْقًۭا حَسَنًۭا ۗ وَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَهُوَ خَيْرُ ٱلرَّٰزِقِينَ
Transliteration:
Wa allaḏīna hājarū fī sabīli l-lāhi ṯumma qutilū ʾaw mātū layarzuqannahumu l-lāhu rizqan ḥasanā wa ʾinna l-lāha lahuwa ḫayru r-rāziqīn.
Translation:
As for those who emigrate in the cause of God and then are martyred or die, God will indeed grant them a good provision. Surely God is the Best Provider.
8. Surah Al-Hadid (57:11):
Arabic:
مَّن ذَا ٱلَّذِى يُقْرِضُ ٱللَّهَ قَرْضًا حَسَنًۭا فَيُضَـٰعِفَهُۥ لَهُۥۖ وَلَهُۥۤ أَجْرٌۭ كَرِيمٌۭ
Transliteration:
Man dhā allaḏī yuqriḍu l-lāha qarḍan ḥasanā fayuḍāʿifahu lahuwa wa lahu ʾajrun karīmun.
Translation:
Who is it that will lend to God a good loan which God will multiply ‘many times over’ for them, and they will have an honourable reward?
9. Surah Al-Ahzab (33:35):
Arabic:
إِنَّ الْمُسْلِمِينَ وَالْمُسْلِمَاتِ وَالْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ وَالْقَانِتِينَ وَالْقَانِتَاتِ وَالصَّادِقِينَ وَالصَّادِقَاتِ وَالصَّابِرِينَ وَالصَّابِرَاتِ وَالْخَاشِعِينَ وَالْخَاشِعَاتِ وَالْمُتَصَدِّقِينَ وَالْمُتَصَدِّقَاتِ وَالصَّائِمِينَ وَالصَّائِمَاتِ وَالْحَافِظِينَ فُرُوجَهُمْ وَالْحَافِظَاتِ وَالذَّاكِرِينَ اللَّهَ كَثِيرًا وَالذَّاكِرَاتِ أَعَدَّ اللَّهُ لَهُم مَّغْفِرَةً وَأَجْرًا عَظِيمًا
Transliteration:
ʾInna l-muslimīna wal-muslimāti wal-muʾminīna wal-muʾmināti wal-qānitīna wal-qānitāti waṣ-ṣādiqīna waṣ-ṣādiqāti waṣ-ṣābirīna waṣ-ṣābirāti wal-khāshiʿīna wal-khāshiʿāti wal-mutaṣaddiqīna wal-mutaṣaddiqāti w-ṣāimīna w-ṣāimāti wal-ḥāfiẓīna furūjahum wal-ḥāfiẓāti wadh-dhākirīna l-lāha kathīrā wadh-dhākirāt ʾaʿadda llāhu lahum maghfiratan wa-ajran ʿaẓīmā.
Translation:
Surely ‘for’ Muslim men and women, believing men and women, devout men and women, truthful men and women, patient men and women, humble men and women, charitable men and women, fasting men and women, men and women who guard their chastity, and mend and women who remember God often-for ‘all of’ them God has prepared forgiveness and a great reward.
